Launches 16 Science Clubs with Community Partners

Growing Community Partnerships to Bring Science and Technology to Life for Black, African Canadian and Caribbean Youth in the Greater Toronto Area

Community non-profit organizations and institutions put their collective resources together in a growing community partnership to bring science and technology to the African Canadian community and other underrepresented groups in science and technology.

Visions of Science Network for Learning in partnership with the following organizations launch 16 community science clubs for youth in Grades 5 to 8.

The 2006-07 program will be divided into three 8-week namely Fall 2006, Winter 2007 and Spring 2007.  Each week, members will participate in hands-on activities, projects or experiments related to science and technology. The youth will experience presentations from researchers and technologists from Mount Sinai Sci-High program, Sick kids’ Kidscience program and other science professionals. There will be field trips to areas of interest and the spring session will culminate in a Visions of Science Science Fair.

Visions of Science and its community partners are focused on the delivery of programming aimed at inspiring youth and turning them on to the possibilities of exciting future careers in science and technology.

Through a generous grant from the YSTOP program, Ministry of Research and Innovation, university and college students, senior high science oriented students will provide fun, interactive and educational science programming for these wonderful young people.

Visions of Science Network for Learning (VoSNL), is an incorporated non-profit organization dedicated to promoting science and technology in the black, African-Canadian and Caribbean communities and other under-represented groups in science. “The world around us is changing so rapidly. Growth industries in Ontario will provide jobs requiring people skilled in all sciences, management, sales, computer science and engineering. Our science clubs and associated programs provide opportunities for Black, African Canadian, and Caribbean Canadian youth to prepare themselves for the challenging future ahead,” explains Francis Jeffers, Executive Director of Visions of Science.
