Shockness Shares Her Wisdom In Debut 3-Book Set
By Colin Rickards, Pride Magazine Contributing Writer

TORONTO, Ontario — The Tutoring Workshop in Toronto is celebrating its 30th
Anniversary this year, and its Founder/Director, Israelin Shockness, has marked
the event by writing an educational trilogy called “What If I Can’t?” “You
Can!”
There is another anniversary for her, too, as for the past 10 years she has
written the popular column “High Expectations” for Pride News Magazine, dealing
with children, youth, education, parenting and community.
The overall title of Shockness’ three volume work comes from the question most
frequently asked by the anxious young people she tutors: “What if I can’t?”
To which the Tobago-born educator responds: “You can!”
Jamaica-born Mary Anne Chambers, who was Ontario’s Minister of Training,
Colleges and Universities between 2003 and 2005, and is now Minister of
Children and Youth Services, has written an enthusiastic and well-informed
Foreword.
“Our young people need to feel that there are reasons to be hopeful,” she says.
“They must see possibilities, real possibilities that are within their
abilities to achieve. But they must also understand that achieving that which
is possible may not be easy.”
Shockness is a good listener and writes without being “preachy” or
condescending, which has helped her to distill three decades of accumulated
wisdom and insights into the three-book collection. Volume 1 encompasses Youth
Motivation for School & Youth Self-Development, with a section on Math
Quick Tips.
Volume 2 deals with Youth Responsibility & Youth Rejecting Violence, plus
English Quick Tips.
Volume 3 looks at Youth/Family Relationships & Youth Community Involvement,
along with 225 Math Challenge Questions, Comprehension, Vocabulary Building and
350 General Knowledge & Discussion Questions.
“Israelin Shockness recognizes that a holistic approach to life is more likely
to result in the achievement of dreams,” Chambers writes. “To those who doubt
that our youth can overcome the seemingly overwhelming challenges that they
sometimes face, I say our youth may be more resilient than they realize.”
An educator and curriculum developer, Shockness has both M.Ed. and Ph.D.
degrees and is Vice-President of the Yorktown Child and Family Centre, a fully
accredited mental health agency.
She is also Co-Founder of The Parenting Skills Exchange & Youth Connection,
a charitable organization offering fathering/parenting, youth leadership,
academic upgrading and children’s programs.
Available from Vancourt Publications (www.vancourtpublications.com), Shockness’
books were given a send-off at a launch at Tropicana Community Services. The
trilogy is dedicated to her husband, Maurice, and grown-up daughters Michelle
and Chellaine. Shockness can be contacted at www.motivateyouth.com.
Each volume of “What If I Can’t?” “You Can!” will be of interest as much to
parents and teachers as to young people.
