Singkil: 101

January 18th 2007

Sure, you can watch. But can you take a risk?

The Play:

An ancient Filipino tale is turned onto its ear by playwright Catherine Hernandez in Singkil.

It’s present-day Scarborough. The grave of Maria Perez is still fresh and so are the wounds she left on her daughter Mimi and husband, Nestor. The family’s darkest secret is set to be buried along with its keeper when Maria’s best friend Norma arrives with a few secrets of her own. Now Mimi must stumble her way back to the land of the living by facing the mysteries held by the dead.

The Challenge:

January 18th’s performance of fu-GEN’s Singkil won’t be any sit-down affair. Before the show, audience members will get the chance to learn the ancient Filipino dance –  the infamous Singkil – themselves. No experience required. Just daring individuals who are willing to walk through beating bamboo at lightning speed.
