Vision and Leadership Awards 2006 (Equality, Human Rights and Social Justice)

 

On Dec. 17, 2006 the Network for Equality, Human Rights and Social Justice held its year-end gathering in Ottawa, Ont., Canada. On that occasion, Vision and Leadership Awards were given out for the first time to the following individuals and organizations:

 

- Clement Abas Apaak (Burnaby, BC), Founder of Canadian Students for Darfur for his humanitarian work (Darfur) and his tireless efforts in fighting racism in Canada

Award presented by Peter Nonkoh

 

- Amnesty International Canada for its National Campaign Against Racial Profiling (Maher Arar Public Inquiry)  

Award presented by Essam Hamed

 

- Fo Niemi (Monteal) for his tireless efforts and determination in fighting racism and injustice in Canada.

Award presented by Bisi Bashorun

 

- Selwyn Pieters (Toronto) for his ongoing work against racial discrimination and for human rights

Award presented by Calvin Lawrence

 

- Racially Visible Action Committee, PSAC (Ottawa) for its action against racial segregation in Canada (Haitian agricultural workers, Guinois Farm, Quebec)

Award presented by Tito Medina

 

- Rich Watson, Kamal Dib and Syed Naseem, economists, initiators of Canada's Racism-Free Workplace Strategy for their pro-active role in eliminating racism in the workplace.

Award presented by Jeanne To-Thanh-Hien and members from various racialized groups

 

These Vision and Leadership Awards represent the recognition from the community and from grassroot individuals to ordinary citizens for their extraordinary accomplishments.
