DUPPY IN THE HOUSE
From the producers of “Playboy Of The West Indies”, “Wipe That Smile”,
“Sweet Pan” and the “Oliver and Trini” specials come the mega comedy
hit, “Duppy In The House”
Written by Marvin Trini Ishmael, Duppy In The House is an adaptation of
the Moliere theme, ”The Doctor In Spite Of Himself”.
Set in Jamaica, the play focuses on the relationship between Seefus,
played by Toronto’s Calypso King Henry King Cosmos Gomez, and Doris
played by Jamaica’s comedic genius Alma James. When Seefus forgets their
wedding anniversary and spends the night with the boys in the company of
the opposite sex, Doris vows to get her revenge. She does so with a
vengeance.
A visiting Indian soldier, played by the enigmatic Ian Jutsun, searching
for the island’s leading Obeah man knocks on the door and opportunity
enters. Doris sees double opportunity, one to make some money to pay her
bills and the other to make her two timing husband pay for his ways. She
sells her husband as the island’s best Obeah man, with one hitch, that
he will only agree to be an obeah man if he is beaten.
From this point, the play is a never ending roller coaster of laughs in
the style of Moliere, as both Doris and Seefus must now play the roles
of Obeah man and assistant. They have to set free the wife of the
Trinidadian politician, Tyra played by Toronto’s hottest new actress
Cara Ricketts, who is possessed by spirits that are as powerful as
Seefus is funny.
What other secrets are hiding in the lives of Tyra and her husband
Rafeek, also played by Ian Jutsun with guest appearance by the writer
Marvin Ishmael, Will Seefus be able to exorcise the spirit? Will Tyra
and her husband experience wedding bliss again or will the Duppy spirit
overcome all?
These are just some of the comedic themes in this super hit Duppy In The
House. Duppy , workshopped in 2001 played too sold out houses in
